India's Ministry of External Affairs recently announced the launching of a major new multilateral initiative to ensure the safety of container shipping traveling through the Indian Ocean. Minister Jaishankar declared that over the following five to ten years, India would seek to establish and deepen dialogue on maritime security issues with all concerned parties. He also evoked India's long cherished tradition of strategic autonomy and announced that it would be in "nobody's interests, and especially not India's , to see Sino-US rivalry spill out into the Indian Ocean", which he described as the world's "shared energy highway."
